Why Art Therapy

Birth is an entrance into the world and it has an impact that stays with us throughout life. The kind of birth we experience is our first introduction to life and although we may not be intellectually conscious, we are certainly conscious on a cellular and unconscious level. During the first days and weeks of life we take in an enormous amount of information and the experience of this period has a major effect on the way we experience and respond to life and other people.

Pregnancy is a profound rite of passage. The essence of childbirth preparation is self discovery, so a mother can give birth in awareness, not to achieve a specific birth outcome.

Exploring pregnancy creatively, using a variety of art materials, can be beneficial in many ways:

  • exploring how our own birth experience has shaped our life;
  • Changing the consciousness of Pregnancy and Birth towards a positive potential
  • Reducing fear about the impending birth
  • Our previous birth stories
  • The affect of pregnancy and birth on the baby and mother
  • Working through loss and grief
  • How our past or current experiences can affect our well being during pregnancy, birth and the post-natal period.

What is the art of birth?

The Art of Birth offers emotional and psychological support for pregnant women and mothers.

Our thoughts and feelings have a direct influence on our physical body so it can be supportive to have a safe space for these feelings to be expressed. The creative arts offer a powerful form of expression, as a tool for transformation, when words are not enough. An Art of Birth group allows you to:

  • Enjoy playing with different art materials
  • Explore the process of Pregnancy and Birth creatively in a safe and nurturing environment
  • Use art as a form of expression and transformation
  • Express feelings honestly and work through any issues towards greater self-knowledge
  • Explore the possibility of an ecstatic birth
  • Dispel the myth of fear surrounding birth
  • Rejoice in connecting with yourself and your baby
  • Interpret your own art work to see what it can reveal
  • Meet new people and share experiences

No experience of art is necessary!

We are all empowered givers of life.

Everyone is Welcome!

About Alex

to support most life issues

The creative process can enhance emotional well-being in absolutely anyone who is willing to try it.

An Art Psychotherapy session allows you to:

  • Experiment and play with different art materials in a safe and nurturing environment
  • Express feelings honestly and spontaneously
  • Explore any issue to enhance self-knowledge
  • Use art as a form of expression and transformation
  • Receive and develop a supportive relationship with the therapist
  • Generate self-esteem, gain confidence and empower yourself to be more in control of your life.
  • Art can be a powerful form of expression as it provides a window to thoughts and feelings that might not be accessible through language.

Art inevitably tells our personal stories in all their dimensions: our feelings, thoughts, experiences, values and beliefs.  In the process of making these visible through art, we are offered a way to know ourselves from a new perspective and an opportunity to transform that perspective.
